Pilot Bushing

The brass insert in the middle of the crank is the pilot bushing. This locates the front of the transmission input shaft. It’s a good idea to replace it when you pull the tranny, one of those while-you’re-at-it sort of things.

I removed the old one in old-skool-fashion with a chisel. I don’t recommend it as I managed to score the wall a bit. I’ve heard a trick is to pack the hole with grease and reinsert the input shaft. A few knocks with a rubber mallet and the grease is supposed to force the bushing out.

I couldn’t find any spec on how far the bushing goes in. After talking to a few people I positioned it just below the bevel of the crank.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
